Morning sickness is an experience that most mothers-to-be expect to go through during the first months of their pregnancies. Some nausea and occasional vomiting is anticipated in the early morning, but most think of it as a period of simple inconvenience. The expectation is for a mild experience that will end before the first trimester ends. For some, however, the short period of moderate discomfort becomes instead a very difficult time of extreme nausea that sometimes extends into the second even third trimesters.
Some pregnant women with severe symptoms are found to have ketones in their urine, and may require hospitalization and rehydration with intravenous solutions to bring electrolytes back to normal. Folic acid deficiencies are another cause of excessive nausea and vomiting. This deficiency can be treated with folic acid supplements.
Research has shown that the majority of pregnant women have elevated progesterone levels. The extra progesterone serves to relax muscles in the uterus to prevent premature birth. Unfortunately, the extra progesterone is not selective. It relaxes muscles throughout the body including those in the stomach and the intestines. This causes a buildup of excess stomach acid that can bring on nausea. The sharp increase in estrogen, which is normal during pregnancy, is also seen as enabling nausea.
When your morning sickness symptoms extend into the second trimester, the mother-to-be should continue to practice the same eating practices that she practiced during the first trimester. Regardless of when the nausea occurs the symptoms can be minimized by eating smaller snacks instead of large meals; eating foods that are high in complex carbohydrates such as toast, steamed rice, baked potatoes, bananas, and honey. They should also continue to drink a lot of liquids in small servings, avoid smoking and alcoholic drinks, and take supplements of B6 and B12.
Don't be inhibited about bothering your obstetrician when you experience extreme nausea. He has a vested interest in your well being, and is well rewarded for his efforts on your behalf. Even though we understand that the causes of morning sickness are not totally understood, effective medical tools and pharmaceuticals are available for successfully treating it symptoms.
With good medical supervision and active involvement on your part, you'll manage to live through this uncomfortable period with no serious complications. You'll come to full term, deliver your beautiful child, and become so immersed in the joys of motherhood, that the uncomfortable period of morning sickness will be a distant memory.
